Breakfast at the hotel...during Sabbath. Now that was an adventure in cultural cuisine. During the Sabbath...no sparks may be used. No cooking allowed. On top of that this is a kosher hotel. Meat and dairy are not to be served at the same meal. Yeah...say goodbye to sausage, bacon and ham at breakfast for awhile!! The menu was.....interesting. Some of my friends in the states would view this buffet as the day after a major hurricane and you were clearing out the fridge!! To begin the buffet...tuna (like canned tuna),herring, mussels..yup, mussels (and all the sour cream, etc toppings to go along with)...assorted cheeses (Brie,cottage cheese, even a baked cheese, etc). Then?? The salad bar...yep! A full blown salad bar for breakfast. Ranch dressing anyone? A few Israeli salads using cucumbers,onions,tomatoes. Assorted breads, fresh fruit, and cereal. A nod to Bill Cosby..they do believe here that chocolate cake IS acceptable for breakfast!!! My kind of thinking. The OJ was more of an orange drink. There was a nice selection of teas. I would tell you what kind I had..but it's all in Hebrew!!! Scott did say the coffee would keep him awake for the next three days!!!
We walked around the main area....Carmel Center if you are checking the map. Took refuge from the winds and bitter cold in a small mall under one of the other hotels. Since it was still the Sabbath, no stores were open but one kiosk of snack foods and a small coffee/pastry cafe. The mall was fairly busy. People just wandering around looking in the windows.....like us. Many of the people are not going to drive during the Sabbath...so you gotta walk!!
Tomorrow is my first day on my own all day. Guess I will go explore a little. I have my walking map...and a slight idea of where I am. This should be interesting. Was excited to see the McD's...till Scott said it's a kosher one. So, sorry Mom no cheeseburgers here....sigh.
